This past Sunday, Bjorn and I visited Fredericksburg and 3 other battlefields. It’s kind of remarkable that we were able to fit 4 battlefields into one day, since it involved a 2 hour drive north and then more driving around between the different sites!
Now, I had no idea what to expect when it came to touring battlefields. I honestly thought we would just stand in literal fields and read signs. While there was a little bit of that, we spent most of the day driving and walking through dense, beautiful forests full of history! It’s silly that I didn’t realize how wooded the area would be (I mean, look at the rest of the state!) but it was a pleasant surprise. So Bjorn got to soak in all the history he could (yes, there’s room for even MORE in his head – crazy!!) and I tagged along, learning at my own pace and offering my own perspective (“Look! Those flowers are just so pretty!!”) ;)
We took turns with the camera. I was pretty proud when he wanted to be the photographer…and it made sense. He knew exactly what important spots he wanted to capture, while I tended to snap shots of the aforementioned nature scenes… :)
All in all, it was a blast! I learned a lot more about the Civil War than I ever had in school. Bjorn got to see the historical spots he already knew about, in real life! And we got to spend quality time together, which is what truly matters.
